I'm working with a group who are seeking to take on the management of a library that is threatened with closure.

I don't think we will be able to use the Local Authorities Library management system, so we want some advice on how we can manage this.

Hi Sophie,

We were unable to stay linked in with our local authority library management system and so we liaised with the other community libraries in our borough and bought the Eclipse management system. It is working well for us as we are able to share catalogues and enable our library users to reserve items between the community libraries. Whilst this isn't quite the same as being able to use their cards borough wide it is a good thing to be able to offer.

hope this helps.

Gloria

Hi

At Little Chalfont in Bucks we have had 5 years of experience of running a Community Library with full blown access to the LMS. It works fine so if we can help to overcome any objections or if there is anything else we can do to help please do not hesitate to make contact. I would suggest that you first discuss with the local authority the issues and concerns they have regarding linking in the their library management system.

There are huge benefits to integrating with the Local Authorities system, and this is likely to enable you to offer a much better service for your users.

There are some challenges for authorities to deal with, which will vary depending on the particular system they use. They may for example have concerns around data protection or security, or cost implications for changing their system.

In most cases there is likely to be a way around these problems, and other authorities such as Warwickshire County Council, and Buckinghamshire County Council have been able to offer restricted access to the library management system for community groups managing libraries.

There are however examples of community libraries that have set up their own software based library management systems, e.g. Eco Computers use Primasoft for their library in the Pepys Centre. Locality may be able to arrange a study visit to find out more.
